Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship between health promoting lifestyle and self-esteem, and the perceived health status for nursing and non-nursing students.
The sample consisted of 189 nursing students and 102 non nursing students of junior in C city. The instrument for this study were structured questionnaire included health promoting lifestyle(60items), self-esteem (10items) and a perceived health status questionnaire.
Data were collected from March to April , 2000 and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression by using SPSS/PC¢¥ program.
The result of research were as follows
1. The results of the comparison between the two groups were not significantly different for health promoting lifestyle, but significantly different for self-esteem and perceived health status.
2. The average score of performance in the health promoting lifestyle variables was 2.52. On subcategories, two groups the highest practice level was "personal hygiene" and the lowest level was "professional management".
3. Performance in a health promoting lifestyle was significantly different according to the demographic variables on financial status for nursing students (F=3.4613, p=0.0334).
4. health promoting lifestyle was significant correlated with self-esteem (r=0.4701, p=0.0000) and perceived health status (r=01196, p=0.042). The most important fact that affect performance in health promoting lifestyle was self-esteem.

In conclusion, this study revealed that self-esteem, perceived health status may be important factors that can improved health promoting lifestyle.
Self-esteem correlated with health promoting lifestyle positively, and was identified to be an important variable that contributed to health promoting lifestyle.
Therefore, the finding of this study may provide significant basic data for health promoting program development.
